Periodically new materials become available and Free Spirit are always keen to test these to understand their properties and potential benefits. Their philosophy is to thoroughly push these but they have to offer something special that will stand the test of time. A new material enabled them to build a very strong slim blank, yet with very efficient recovery, reminiscent of the Hi-S range.
Just because they arent Hi-S prices don't be fooled that these aren't capable of extreme ranges as in testing they were casting huge distances, testament to the loading response and fast recovery this material lends to the blanks. The slimness of the blank helps with this but the carbon has to be high quality not to feel tip heavy.
As with all Free Spirit rods the finish has to be cosmetically attractive and different and the weave is quite stunning and as usual features the 'Perdurable' finish. To compliment the 40t low resin ultra slim blank is a new Fuji reel seat - VSS17, which features open sides and a carbon sleeve of the same material as the blank is fitted to help transmission through the seat to the hand. Guides feature black frames since the blank has a dark finish and all fittings are stainless steel for durability.
On the Full Cork versions they feature a matching Clone reel seat with an isotope slot.
A word about casting versions of the S Lite range - they have used the 'ive name for both the 12' and 13' rods which they don't do lightly! This was since the performance and feel was so close to that of the Hi-S'ives, which have become top sellers and offers great casting but with exceptional fish playing - S Lite'ives offer very similar performance at a significantly reduced price.
These are great small water and river rods, ideal fishing Canals and Rivers as they don’t poke to far out into boat traffic and also don’t take up towpath space so are not at the mercy of walkers and cyclists, they are also great stalking rods and rods to be used from boats.
Through action blanks but with generous amounts of power lower down the rod.
Available in full cork or abbreviated handles with 30mm ring sets.
A more powerful version of the 2.75lb, it has found favour with those fishing for big fish on weedy waters where a little more hook and hold is required, they are also brilliant rods to use from a boat on continenatal waters, when in a boat they don’t overhang and risk getting caught in islands snags etc, it is also much easier to play a fish from a boat on a shorter rod.
A great all round carp rod, equally at home fishing at 20 yds as it is 100yds, will suit most people most of the time, perfect for leads to 3/3.5 oz but will still cast a 2oz lead accurately due to the forgiving nature of the tip. A beautifully slim and well balanced rod and will handle baitrunner size reels or big pits.
Ok so this one is great for most angling situations, it will put a 3,5oz lead around 130yds comfortably, more in the right hands, but is a great smaller water rod too, if you need to fish at 30-70 yds its equally as at home as it is a 100yds+. If you are after one set of rods to cover 95% of your fishing then these are the ones.
A stiffer version of the 3.25lb where maybe solid PVA bag use or those extra yards are needed, a slightly faster taper than the 3.25lb so is a little stiffer when playing fish, not a poker though but noticeably more powerful.
This was a bit of an indulgence by Free Spirit as the owner Simeon loves a 12’6” rod, to be fair we cant argue as it’s a lovely rod, the extra length makes casting easier and being 3lb 6oz it's power drops inbetween the 3.25 and 3.5lb tc’s, it will put leads further than the 3.25lb but keeps the tip softer than the 3.5lb, a cracking rod.
As Free Spirit say they don’t use the Ive name lightly, so to call these S-Lites Ives means they are very proud of what they can do. If you don’t want to spend Hi-S money but need a rod capable of 150yds plus yet still retaining a decent tip for playing fish then look no further. The carbon used in the S-lItes means that they have created a light, well balanced rod with incredibly fast tip speed recovery, it results in big distances being achieved but without the compromise in playability, again we at the shop favour the 13’ as if you are after distance it certainly gives you that, but we aren’t taking anything away for the 12’. These rods also make great long range PVA bag rods, the power through the middle and butt of the rod means you can push a loaded bag out without “collapsing” the rod therefore reducing the arc of the lead on the cast.
